Pass, fail, or die.

Bobby Tremain is going to flunk out. And it’s all a massive snowstorm’s fault.

He’ll hibernate until spring unless he can figure out why he’s sleepier than the average bear shifter.

When his professor assigns him a stunning genius-level tutor to pass exams, he discovers Lynn Frampton has her own problems.

Lynn suspects the weather’s being magically enhanced. But as the only regular human on campus, nobody listens to her. Bobby’s listening but that’s a new experience for Lynn.

Working together is the only way to survive the semester and they must focus on books instead of each other.

But exams aren’t their only problem. Ignoring the magical threat is unbearably dangerous.

Unknown forces want Providence Paranormal College closed down at any cost. You’ll love this tale of brain and bear. And this is only the beginning of a ten book series.

Get it now.

This is a warm hug of a book with a slathering of paranormal goodness. I’ve read a lot of paranormal books and am beyond bored with bear shifter books and dragon shifter books, too. But I have never encountered a shifter story where the bear shifter is troubled by hibernation. Considering it’s second nature to real bears, it’s astounding no one has really picked up that thread before, as if it’s just too troubling to have their gorgeous, sexy shifters be asleep for a portion of a season. This book felt almost like it was set in the 1950s (I know it wasn’t. It had mentions of cell phones throughout it). Bobby felt like he had been pulled from the cast of Grease, as well as all of the other characters in the book. He’s the stereotypical jock (but with a warm, caring nature) and with that adorable sleepiness. While Blaine made me think biker with a black leather jacket (and I adored how loyal of a friend he was). And the sex scenes were mostly done off-camera with nothing graphic. It has the innocence of that time period as well as feel like I was stepping onto the set of Grease. The cast of side characters that darted in for a quick introduction were as colorful as the characters from the Harry Dresden books and I’m definitely looking forward to all of them starring in their own books (though the types of fairies and their courts feel very borrowed from Dresden Files). This story had a lot of humor to it, also like Dresden Files, with so much imagination to it. I would definitely recommend this series to friends and am itching to continue on to the next book.

Bearly Awake Providence Paranormal College Book One eBook DR Perry Reviews

“I followed her to the library, feeling like Princess Leia. Instead of Obi-Wan, this snarky girl was my only hope.”

First, I absolutely LOVED the geek references throughout. And not just the obvious ones. If you’re Star Wars savvy enough to recognize a Sarlacc pit, you’ll finish this book with a hefty respect for the author’s geek cred. And if you aren’t, you won’t be overwhelmed by the references either. They’re subtle and well supported by surrounding text.

The writing style was clean, engaging, and imminently readable. The Paranormal College integrates the full gamut of super-creatures -- vampire, shifter, magi, goblin, dragon, etc. – to create an alternative universe that fans of paranormal literature will definitely want to spend more time in. I was thrilled to see that this is the first of 9 books in that universe to date.

And speaking of dates, the romance angle was believable and sweet.

From the technical side, this manuscript is clean and well edited – a real gem in today’s sloppy marketplace.

Highly recommend.
Bearly Awake is the first in a series of books set at Providence Paranormal College. Bobby is what’s known as a bear shifter, meaning that he can shift into the form of a bear at will - it also gives him some bear-like qualities. Lynn is a human student at the college who’s having trouble making friends. When a freak snowstorm hits, Lynn is assigned to be Bobby’s tutor and make sure he stays awake for his finals instead of hibernating.

I loved the characters in this book so much. They were lighthearted and fun, and made the sort of nerdy puns I can appreciate. They feel like the sort of people I make friends with in real life. I also really loved Maddie and I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to see more of her in the later books. There was definite sexual tension between Bobby and Lynn right from the moment they started talking though, in a good way that builds the emotion up until you’re just so eager for them to finally know how much they love each other.

Probably my biggest criticism with this book though it that it feels like we’re starting in the middle of the action. The book starts right with Bobby falling asleep in class, and it feels like I missed all the backstory on the snowfall and his grades slipping and so forth. It’s hard to feel worried for him when he’s getting threatened with flunking when I haven’t really gotten much of a chance to know him. Then he meets Lynn and they start spending all their time together, and the plot moves pretty quickly from there out. I feel like just a little more introduction would help this story out a lot.

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series and meeting other students at PPC. You would probably enjoy this book if you like reading lighthearted NA romance with paranormal elements. It’s a great stepping stone for those of us who grew up reading fantasy and are just starting to want to read something more adult, or to branch away from the typical epic quests.
So, this wasn't necessarily bad. It fit the bill of being fluffy and non-taxing, which is what I wanted when I picked it up. But I didn't feel like it held together very well. The plot jumps around and a fairly large mystery isn't solved. Worse though, was the main character, Lynn. She's supposed to be smart and sassy and snarky and sarcastic. I know this because her internal monologue tells me, the reader, about it a dozen times. But I just found her unpleasant. Sure, there's some fun nerdiness, that I and a large portion of the female populace recognize and appreciate. But it's treated like she's something special for it. And her constant, "I'm not like other girls because I'm smart," is a blatant insult. It infers that other women aren't smart. Duh. Basically, it felt like the author was trying way too hard to be funny and it just fell flat on its face.
